Set-Up & Components
Catan is an island, surrounded by sea. There are six sea tiles that fit together like a jigsaw, making a large hexagonal frame. Inside, you’ll need to place the 19 smaller hex tiles, which comprise of the five different terrains: Hills, forests, mountains, fields and pastures.
For this beginner setting, next take the 18 small circular number tokens (ranging 2-12) and place specific numbers on each terrain hex – again, mimicking the set-up of the hexagonal resources.
Place the grey Robber figure on desert rather than a number token .
Separate and stack the five different types of Resource cards (brick, lumber, ore, grain and wool) and place them into decks.
Shuffle and place the Development cards deck.
Also place out the two special cards: Longest Road, and Largest Army.
Allocate colors to the players, Catan is a three or four-player game). Give each player settlements, cities, roads and a Building Card costs reference card in their corresponding color.
Each player then places two of their settlements on intersections where three hexes meet.
Every player starts with resource cards depending on their placement of second settlements placement.
Give the two D6 dice to the start player and you’re all ready to start settling the island of Catan!

Step 1: Placing Settlements
Initial setup is crucial in Catan. Good players consider all factors such as number tiles, location, and ports.
Key Strategy
- Get one of everything
- Maximize numbered tiles
- Keep in mind Ports
- Get a good distribution of numbers
- Balance resources
- Determine where you can build to
- Prioritize ore and wheat
The order in which you get to go will affect your opportunities. There is no significant advantage with going first, but the later you go the more likely better spots will be taken.

Step 2: Placing Roads
One needs to determine where they would like to build towards. This should be towards the outside of the board.
Step 3: Resources
The resources are not equal as there are 19 tiles:
- 3 Brick
- 3 Ore
- 4 Sheep
- 4 Wheat
- 4 Wood
- 1 Desert
Wheat is one of the most useful resources as it is needed to build settlements, cities, development cards.

How Do You Win?
The only way to win Catan is to get 10 victory points. The aim of Catan is to acquire or trade resources to obtain different settlements across the island’s five different terrains. One can get VP by building settlements, cities or to buy Development cards.
